October 11, 2006 19:55 - Goulish Gourds at the Butterfly Conservatory?

Halloween is coming.

And that brings to mind gourds, pumpkins and other items we just associate with this time of year.

If you had enough forsight to have planted some pumpkin seeds, you might have the extra satisfaction of carving your very own home-grown pumpkin. We did that a couple of years ago and it was special.

If you are interested in gourds, pumpkins and squashes - how they grow, their history and uses today - the Butterfly Conservatory is the place to be on Oct 21.

You will even get a chance to carve a pumpkin. The Niagara Falls Review has all the details.

NPC offering Ghoulish Gourds workshop

Niagara Falls Review, October 10, 2006

The Niagara Parks Commission will host a Ghoulish Gourds workshop at the Butterfly Conservatory from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 21.

The event will offer information on how gourds, pumpkins and squash grow, from learning how the seeds germinate to seeing the fruit on the vine.

Students will learn the history of gourds and how they were used as household items in the past, as well as how they are used today.

They will also have the opporunity to do a ghoulish craft, just in time for Halloween.

For ticket information and to reserve a space, call the NPC at 877-642-7252, ext. 3.

October 16, 2006 22:17 - General Brock Parkway has nice ring.

It seems only fitting that one on Niagara's most renown historic figures receives a little extra recognition.

Highway 405, which runs on the south side of Queenston Heights when General Brock died in battle, will now be renamed in his honour.

It will now be named General Brock Parkway.

Corey Larocque of the Niagara Falls Review has all the details on how this came about, why and who played an important part in making this happen.

Hwy. renamed General Brock Parkway

COREY LAROCQUE

Niagara Falls Review, October 14, 2006

For thousands of children whose families drive into Niagara, there will be a "teachable moment" when they ask "who is General Brock?" says Ontario Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield.

She formally renamed Highway 405 after Maj.-Gen. Sir Isaac Brock, a hero of the War of 1812, during a ceremony at Queenston Heights Friday. Blue signs with white lettering and the shield from Brock's coat of arms will be posted at both ends of the road that connects the Queen Elizabeth Way and the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge.

General Brock Parkway runs along the south side of Queenston Heights park, the site of the battle where the military commander of Upper Canada was fatally shot. He was leading an uphill charge from Queenston against American invaders who crossed from Lewiston and took the high ground.

About 14,000 vehicles a day travel along the highway, Cansfield said. Giving drivers and passengers reason to think about Brock will promote Canadian history.

October 25, 2006 21:25 - Will Niagara Falls downtown renovation mean expropriation?

Now that the revitilization plan for downtown Niagara Falls moves closer to reality, what happens to the current businesses in the areas slated for revitilization?

Will they be given a fair shake?

Or are they going to be forced out and their properties taken at below market prices for an outside investor's benefit.

The Niagara Falls Review has all the details, some of which have been highlighted below.

Progress downtown means selling: Retailer; Owners like idea of negotiation, not expropriation for revitalization

JENNIFER PELLEGRINI in the Niagara Falls Review October 21, 2006
--
Aldermen and business owners have been reacting this week to a city staff report leaked to The Review. The Property Acquisition and Disposition Plan, which identifies more than 60 downtown properties that might be required to realize Lichtman's Historic Niagara plan to create a retail district along Queen Street.

Negotiating sales is the starting point and preferred solution for the properties, and the report indicates some private properties are "likely available for sale." But others might require the city to use its expropriation powers, it states.

The plan was discussed behind closed doors at council Oct. 16, but aldermen voted at that meeting to review it again in the open session of council Oct. 30.
