July 3, 2006 23:21 - Concert in Park a special event.
I just got back from a wonderful evening down by the Falls. James Bryan and the Philosopher Kings were playing in a free concert down in Victoria Park. With the American Falls in the background, the concert was great. The crowd was filled with families and it was fun to see the kids playing and singing along with us older folk.
The warm evening air was nicely dampened by the mist. I love taking pictures and this evening down by the Falls has been well documented. It's not often these days that you can easily go right up to the stage to take some closeups.
At some point you might even see them up on Visiting-Niagara-Falls.com . And to top of the evening, at 10 pm the band played a bit of background music and fireworks filled the air. Now if only I got my camera to flash at the right time, there should be some nice 'fireworks over the falls' photos too.

July 5, 2006 21:10 - Italian fans go World Cup Crazy in Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls was awash in Italian flags when Italy beat Germany 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon. And I personally am going to try and get down to the Clifton Hill and Victoria Avenue for the final game on Sunday. Italy will be facing France and if the Italians win on Sunday, there will be one heck of a party throughout the Falls. Here are some exerpts from the Niagara Falls Review, July 05, 2006.'One hundred and twenty minutes of nervous anticipation was followed by sheer excitement and pride for Italian soccer fans in Niagara Falls Tuesday.
The corner of Victoria Avenue and Clifton Hill was swamped with Italian flags as people poured into the area in celebration of Italy's 2-0 World Cup semi-final victory over host Germany Tuesday afternoon.
Police rerouted traffic while the celebration was ongoing. Paramedics from Niagara Emergency Medical Services were on site to ensure the party was proceeding safely. '

July 7, 2006 22:21 - It's almost World Cup time.
It's only a couple of days till the World Cup Final and I, for one, am ready. I would like to end up down at Clifton Hill for the Sunday 2 pm kick-off. And it looks as though the police are expecting quite a crowd.
If you are in the area and want to take part in some 'Once every four year craziness' with a home town favourite. Come on down. It's going to be quite a time.
Here is an exerpt from the Niagara Falls Review, July 7, 2006
Police preparing for World Cup craziness
Tony Ricciuto
Local News - Friday, July 07, 2006
Niagara Falls has been infected with World Cup fever that could reach the boiling point Sunday when the Italian soccer team plays France for the championship.
And - especially if Italy wins - the Clifton Hill area could be awash in flags, painted faces and wall-to-wall celebrants by late afternoon. After Italy's semifinal win earlier this week, there were so many people there vehicle traffic was rerouted away from the hill into the early evening.
Niagara Parks Police Chief Tim Berndt said his officers should be able to handle any traffic problems that might arise following Sunday's game.
"On weekends we're in pretty good shape because we have all our summer seasonal provincial offence officers on duty and they would be able to handle any normal traffic congestion, as well as any increased levels of traffic, that might come down into the park."

July 9, 2006 11:57 - Niagara Falls ready to go World Cup Crazy
Niagara Falls has always had a large Italian community. And I have a feeling that today they are going to make their presence felt. At 2:00 pm, the final game of the FIFA World Cup takes place. France and Italy square off in what promises to be one heck of a game.
My wife, who's parents are Italian, and I, are going to watch the game at Cllub Italia in Niagara Falls, It's their annual picnic that last year drew over 5,000 visitors.
This year, coincidently, Italy is in the finals of the World Cup on the afternoon of the annual picnic. Talk about all the stars lining up just right. It will be our first time there, but short of being in Italy (or France), what better place for a football/ I mean soccer fan to watch the game.
Kick-off is at 2:00. If you enjoy high tension drama and competition, why not join the largest ever expected TV audience as eyes all around the world focus their attention on one common denominator.
I can hardly wait.
July 10, 2006 20:35 - Niagara Falls awash in red, white and green.
The final game of the 2006 FIFA World Cup did not disappoint. The battle between two old rivals was a tense nail biting affair. My wife and I caught the game at the crowded Club Italia Hall. After having a wonderful plate of gnocci and meatballs we settled in for the game.
The crowd was loud, enthusiastic, and definitiely partisan. With every tackle and deak, the crowd roared it pleasure or displeasure.
I had a very energetic youngster sitting a couple seats away with a large Italian flag I was sure would eventually hit me. His grandfather sitting right behind him spent as much time worring about the waving flag as he did cheering on the Azzuri. As a father of 2 young boys as well, I could relate.
Between avoid the flag, cheering on the Italians and no end of fun, it was an exciting game full of drama and excitement. Itlay won in a penalty shoot-out. The place went wild. And a night-long party started in Niagara Falls, and many other places as well.
There is nothing quite like it when honking cars with cheering people and flags waving fill the streets. Niagara Falls was hopping last night. The Niagara Falls Review described it well in their July 10 article.

July 12, 2006 20:10 - Chippawa' s swimming spot
Growing up in Chippawa was wonderful. In the summer, a lot of time involved the Chippawa creek, with swimming around and jumping off the 'new' bridge and the old railway bridge. I moved to Chippawa when I was 12 years old. I was not a very strong swimmer so I avoided jumping off the bridge.
I did, however, swim across the fast moving creek on numerous occasions as I got older. So I couldn't help but smile and reminisce with this recent article -
"Weightman Bridge site of local history, summer ritual
COREY LAROCQUE for the Niagara Falls Review
Tuesday, July 11, 2006
Local News - Beating the heat by jumping off the Weightman Bridge isn't just a summer ritual, it's a rite of passage for Chippawa teens. It has been for years.
Two Niagara Falls teens who pedalled their bikes Thursday to plunge into the Welland River do it "'cause it's fun," said 14-year-old Justinn.
They know it's a longstanding tradition - despite the signs on the bridge saying not to jump or dive off the bridge. "
So, if you are a strong swimmer, you will enjoy the creek's refreshing water, but BEWARE! The current is swift.
The locals usually just walk upstream to Kings Bridge Park and hop in the water and just float down the creek with the current doing all the work. They usually are the ones with the tractor sized inner tubes. When they pass the second partial bridge, its time to go ashore, and walk back to Kings Bridge Park for another leisurely float down the creek. Summer really is a special time in Chippawa.

If you like learning about what happened at important points in history, you are in for a treat.Old Fort Niagara, in Youngstown, N.Y., is presenting 'The War of 1812 Encampment'.
History comes to life as British and American forces will garrison the historic fortress to stage a weekend of drills and public programs.
There is even a night battle, July 29, when we get to see the British storming and capturing of Niagara in Dec 1813.
The dates are July 29th and 30th. Read a lot of good info about this facinating historical event in War of 1812 re-enactment in Niagara Falls Review July 14, 2006.
July 15, 2006 20:19 - Niagara scores another movie credit.
Niagara has been the backdrop for Marilyn Monroe and Superman too. And now Niagara Falls is the backdrop for Camille, a supernatural-themed love story starring Sienna Miller and James Franco. Tourists get inside look at filmmaking; Big-name actors, producers thrill crowds during filming of Camille at Table Rock
JOHN LAW for the Niagara Falls Review, Friday, July 14, 2006
Local News - Hundreds of tourists didn't mind getting soaked at Table Rock Thursday for a glimpse of Hollywood at work.
A large section of the wet and windy landmark was cordoned off for filming of Camille, a supernatural-themed love story starring Sienna Miller and James Franco. The scene being shot occurs near the end of the film, as Franco - playing an ex-con on an ill-fated honeymoon in Niagara Falls - is fired upon by police.

July 18, 2006 21:27 - Even Hollywood can't stop Maid of the Mist
Niagara Falls is the backdrop for the filming of the supernatureal love story Camille. These exerpts are from the Niagara Falls Review July 18, 2006' Hollywood comes back to the city - John Law
'The film's final scenes take place in Niagara Falls - particularly the Maid of the Mist, where the crew was filming all day Wednesday.
Despite the production, it was business as usual for the famed tourist attraction. A sign near the entrance let visitors know a movie was being filmed.
Sienna Miller and James Franco, the film's stars, rode the boat several times, filming the movie's emotional conclusion.
"They'll be on the boat all day to get two or three minutes of footage," said Grodnick.
"It's an amazing place to have the climax of the picture."
Maid of the Mist spokesman Tim Ruddy (no relation to the producer) said the crew made the best of a drizzly day, integrating the actors into the regular boat trips (the company will not shut down during the summer, even for Hollywood).
"This is a big deal," he said, "but we have to keep the lanes open for passengers."
---
---
However the film turns out, both producers agree Niagara Falls did its part.
"It's just one of the great sites of all time," raved Ruddy.
"The Maid of the Mist couldn't be better," added Grodnick. "Of all the locations, this is the one we can't really fake." '

July 19, 2006 20:44 - Avoid heavy weekend crowds, if possible.
If you have any flexibility of when you are 'Discovering Niagara Falls', try to avoid the weekends. Here are three very good reasons:
1. There are often cheaper accommodations available.
2. There are much smaller crowds to manoeuvre through.
3. There is MUCH less traffic. Period!
And that is a good thing as this recent Niagara Falls Review article shows -

July 20, 2006 17:59 - Niagara Falls can get pretty hot.
When you think of Niagara Falls, you normally dont think of 30 C or higher. Typically, we get about 14 hot days every year. And it sounds like its going to continue.Get used to the heat; Climatologist warns high temps likely to increase
ROBIN HEALEY for the Niagara Falls Review on Tuesday, July 18, 2006 .
Local News - These are the dog days of summer, says the senior climatologist for Environment Canada.
"You can't go a summer in Southern Ontario without a heat wave, so maybe this is it," said David Phillips. He said the third week of July is usually the warmest of the year.
Monday reached a high of 32 C, but it felt like 42 C with the humidity. It marked the fourth day in a row hotter than 30 C. Although today's forecast calls for relief with thunder showers and a 27 C high, Wednesday and Thursday will return to 30 C heat.
The region's public health department issued a smog advisory on Monday in addition to the excessive heat alert that was called Friday.
"You go out there and you can cut the air with a knife," said Phillips. He said a flow of southern air picked up air pollution from coal burning plants in the Ohio Valley to cause the hazy air.
Typically southern Ontario gets 13 to 14 hot days a year. Phillips said the summer forecast calls for more hot days.
But not as many hot days as last year. Read the whole article.
July 21, 2006 20:42 - Battle of Lundy's Lane honored this Sunday
If you enjoy history you can honor the British and Canadian soldiers who fought and died in the July 25, 1814 battle. Service marks Battle of Lundy's Lane
Niagara Falls Review, Thursday, July 20, 2006
The annual service commemorating the Battle of Lundy's Lane will be held Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
The Lundy's Lane Historical Society organizes the event each year to honour the British and Canadian soldiers who fought and died in the July 25, 1814 battle.
The battle marked an end to the American army's push into the Niagara frontier that began earlier that month. Sunday's service will be held in the Drummond Hill Cemetery near the battle's memorial monument.
A reception at the Battleground Hotel, across the street from the cemetery, will follow the service.

July 25, 2006 17:28 - Brock showing his age.
I often pass the statue of General Isaac Brock as I drive through Niagara on the Lake. You begin to take things for granted. It seems that the General, his monument that is, is getting some needed attention. Brock statue battles time, elements
JOHN ROBBINS for the Niagara Falls Review, July 25, 2006
Local News - For more than 150 years, the stone likeness of Maj. Gen. Isaac Brock, hailed as a saviour of Upper Canada, has towered over the Niagara-on-the Lake countryside.
The nearly four-metre high statue of Brock, which sits atop the massive 56-metre tall limestone monument that bears his name, has endured just about everything man and nature can throw at it.
--
Since then, the monument has been bombarded by wind, rain, hail, snow, ice and pollution. It has been hit by lightning at least once. An estimated 35,000 to 45,000 people visit the monument each year, many of them attempting the slow climb up the 235 steps of the monument's internal staircase.
While there's no reason to believe the monument won't still be around in another 150 years, there's no question it's in need of some long overdue work, said Ron Dale, superintendent of Niagara National Historic Sites, an agency of Parks Canada.
"It's very well built," said Dale. "It's quite a remarkable achievement, but it's getting up there in age."
Inspection of the monument over the past couple of years revealed cracking in some of the monument's decorative features, as well as areas where mortar between the stones has come loose. The inspection also showed the deficiencies of previous restoration work, which was carried out in the early part of the 20th century.
In the interest of safety, the monument has been closed to the public while a detailed engineering study is completed. Currently, there is also a fence around the base.

July 26, 2006 20:34 - U.S. invasion of 1812 a mistake?
It is true that hindsight is 20/20. And that is true regarding the 1812 invasion of the British colony of Canada by the United States. An American history professor called the U.S. invasion 'reckless'.
U.S. invasion 'reckless:' Author by COREY LAROCQUE for the Niagara Falls Review, July 26, 2006
The War of 1812 was a lost cause for the United States before the first cannonball flew, says Donald R. Hickey, an American history professor.
"Given the state of its army, the logistical problems and the enemy it faced, the War of 1812 was probably unwinnable for the United States," Hickey writes in Don't Give Up The Ship! Myths of the War of 1812, a book that hit bookshelves this summer.
--
When the U.S. declared war, former president Thomas Jefferson predicted the invasion of Canada would be a "mere matter of marching."
History hasn't been kind to that assessment. Even contemporary American legislators questioned why the U.S. was waging war.
After almost 200 years of historians' analyses, Hickey writes the decision to invade Canada was "more reckless and ill-advised than the harshest critics of the Republican administration have suggested."

July 27, 2006 18:39 - It peaches time.
Niagara has many things to offer both visitors and locals. One of my favorites is all the local fruit. If you drive through the countryside you will see a lot of farms offering freshly picked fruit.
As a local Niagara resident, it's one of the benefits of living in the fruitbelt.
I know I can also get fresh fruit at the supermarket, but it just dosen't seem the same.
And according to the Niagara Falls Review, this years' peach crop is ready a week early.
But don't worry, all this hot weather sweetens the crop while the timely rain makes them big.
Peach lovers rejoice!; Crop a full week early this season, good harvest expected
ERIK WHITE In the Niagara Falls Review, July 27, 2006 -
Local News - Niagara's peach crop is about a week early this year.
-----
Len Troup, chair of the Ontario Tender Fruit Producers Marketing Board, said the rain has been very "timely." Often coming, just in time, at the end of a string of hot, sunny days.
The sun makes the fruit sweet and the rain makes it big. And this year's crop is looking like a good one.
And a relief, Troup said, after last year's peach harvest was on the small side following a harsh winter. The peaches were good, there were just weren't too many of them.
This will be a much larger crop.

July 31, 2006 19:47 - Fort George 'under attack'
History came alive for those lucky spectators at Fort George over the weekend. And in case you don't know the outcome the Niagara Falls Review has all the detailsFort George 'under attack'
DON FRASER in the Niagara Falls Review, July 31, 2006
It was an old Loyalist skirmish all over again - but this time American spectators were on the sidelines, cheering for their team.
At an elaborate historical re-enactment staged at Fort George on Saturday, soldiers under the British flag and their First Nations allies took a beating at first.
After suffering a number of mock-musket casualties, the Loyalist troops then forced the Americans to retreat back to Fort George, which they had previously captured.
