June 1, 2006 21:41 - Queenston Heights Battlefield Tour this weekend

After having lived in Niagara for over 40 years, I am finally going on a battlefield tour of Queenston Hieghts this Saturday.

Historian Robert Malcomson will conduct the Battlefield Tour. It retaces the steps of the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Queenston Heights.

Those interested should meet at the base of Brock's Monument at Queenston Heights Park, at 1 pm Saturday.

The walking tour is open to the public and costs $15. Tickets are available in advance at the Friends of Fort George Gift Shop at Fort George or by calling 905 468-6621.

You should make sure you wear walking shoes and bring a snack and drinking water. If you can't make it on Saturnday, the tour will be held again on Aug. 5 and Oct 14.

June 2, 2006 23:09 - 'Business as usual' at casinos after smoking ban

by JENNIFER PELLEGRINI in Niagara Falls Review, June 2. 2006

It was "business as usual" at the city's two casinos Wednesday, the first day of the province's smoke-free legislation which made it illegal to smoke in any public building in Ontario - including previously exempted gaming halls.

"Attendance seems to be the same," Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. spokeswoman Teresa Roncon said of the number of patrons who tried their luck at Casino Niagara and the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort Wednesday.

Although she did not have attendance figures available for Niagara's two casinos, Roncon said reports from Falls Management Company indicated there was little difference between Wednesday's attendance and any other mid-week day.

June 3, 2006 21:43 - Rushing passport plan - Is it a good idea?

There may be a groundswell of resistance to the proposed passport issue on the US side of the border.

Canada is understandably concerned with its ramifications.

A good editorial in the Niagara Falls Review June 3, 2006, addresses the problems of rushing the passport plan.

Rushing passport plan won’t serve Canada, U.S. well

Saturday, June 03, 2006

Editorial & Opinion - Concern surrounding the passport issue is gaining steam both here and in the United States. Western premiers discussed the move by the U.S. to require a passport or other secure document to enter the country by Jan. 1, 2008.

At their conference this week, Manitoba Premier Gary Doer called implementation of the law economic suicide. Ontario Conservative leader John Tory was in the city mid-week to slam the plan and the provincial government (what else would you expect?) over its handling of the issue.

It hasn’t been lost on the United States Senate, which has voted to delay the requirement.

It’s one thing for Canadian politicians to be taking issue with the rule. They can make the case on the dire economic consequences the plan could have on both sides of the border. Given the vote in the U.S. Senate, opposition to the plan is gaining traction south of the border.

It’s worth noting that while the senate vote would extend full implementation of the regulations to June 1, 2009, the House of Representatives and the president still need to approve it. The delay is by no means a done deal.

However, both senators and governors from states that share borders with Canada are coming to realize the serious consequences this plan could have on tourism. A huge part of getting the issue solved to satisfaction of people on both sides of the border depends on opposition to the plan from within the U.S.

June 6, 2006 17:49 - Last Direct Invasion of Canada? 140 years ago and it wasn't the Americans.

The Battle of Ridgeway was a defeat for Canada at the time but it helped Canada move towards Confederation a year later.

The Irish are coming!; Battle of Ridgeway commemorated with plaque, re-enactment

JOHN LAW in the Niagara Falls Review, June 5, 2006

Strangely enough, it took a bunch of armed, angry Irishmen to help Canada forge its identity.

On June 1, 1866, the Fenian Brotherhood - the American wing of the Irish Revolutionary Brotherhood - decided to strike back against the British which had killed its hierarchy and scattered its leaders. Canada would be the ideal target.

About 600 Fenians crossed the Niagara River and tussled with the Queen's Own Rifles, the 13th Battalion and the York and Caledonia rifle companies in what is known as the Battle of Ridgeway.

It was a fight the Fenians actually won, but fearing Canadian and British reinforcements, they soon retreated back to the U. S. where they were taken into custody. For Canada, the stinging defeat exposed how vulnerable the country was, and proved pivotal in the Confederation movement.

June 7, 2006 19:54 - Tiny chapel a big hit

Its small but oh so picturesque with a white picket fence and orchards surrounding it. A real photo opportunity is available here for people walking, biking or driving between Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake,

There are two pews for praying or just reflecting as you take a short break on your journey. And it has become quite a popular site for traditional or personalized wedding ceremonies.

June 8, 2006 17:06 - Fort Erie not a target

Thursday, June 08, 2006 in the Niagara Falls Review

Local News - Niagara Regional Police say Fort Erie was not a target of an alleged terrorist bomb plot.

"Neither the Town of Fort Erie nor any other location in the Regional Municipality of Niagara was the site of terrorist training nor the site of an alleged planned terrorist plots," Deputy Chief Donna Moody said Wednesday. "Any report to the contrary is considered to be erroneous."

Fort Erie figures prominently in court documents relating to charges against 12 of 17 Toronto-area suspects arrested last week by Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

Moody's comments are based on information the police received from the agencies directly involved in the investigation.

June 13, 2006 15:11 - Fort Erie terror role remains unknown

Here are some interesting exerpts from the Niagara Falls Reviews recent summation of the recent terrorists capture in southern ontario.

By JOHN ROBBINS in the Niagara Falls Review, June 13, 2006

BRAMPTON It could be weeks, months or even longer before the public learns how Fort Erie figures into the allegations against 17 Toronto-area people accused of participating in a homegrown terrorist plot.

Media from around the world descended on a Brampton courtroom where most of the suspects appeared Monday, hoping to get a clearer picture of the scope of the alleged plot.

Instead, a justice of the peace imposed a publication ban on the proceedings, which means much of what was said inside the courtroom cannot be reported.
---
---
Fort Erie figures prominently in court documents containing the charges against the 12 adult suspects, who range in age from 19 to 43.

All 12 men are facing one count each of participating in a terrorist group.

Three of them face charges of importing weapons and ammunition for the purpose of terrorist activity.

Nine of the men are facing charges of receiving training from a terrorist group, while four are charged with providing training.

Six are also charged with intending to cause an explosion causing serious bodily harm or death.

Fort Erie is mentioned in four of six indictments, but there’s no mention in two indictments related to providing or receiving terrorist training.

The town is also mentioned in counts relating to participating in a terrorist group, importation of weapons and ammunition for the purpose of terrorist activity and intending to cause an explosion causing serious bodily harm or death.

Based on the court documents, initial media reports suggested some terrorist training had taken place in Fort Erie a claim the Royal Canadian Mounted Police quickly dismissed.

Later, there was some speculation Fort Erie may have been a terror target, since the town is mentioned in one of the indictments that accuses six of the suspects of having intent to cause an explosion.

Niagara Regional Police Deputy Chief Donna Moody last week issued a statement saying the NRP had been in contact with law enforcement agencies directly involved in the case and had been assured neither Fort Erie “nor any other location in the Regional Municipality of Niagara was the site of terrorist training nor the site of alleged planned terrorist plots.”

There has been no official explanation about how Fort Erie figures into the intent to cause an explosion charges.

Both the RCMP and the NRP have refused further comment, since charges are now before the courts.

----
----

While security was somewhat relaxed compared to that present during the last court appearance, police patrols were frequent and surveillance was obvious.

For much of the day, a dark-coloured helicopter circled, and occasionally hovered, above the courthouse, while police officers driving in black vans with tinted windows roamed the courthouse parking lot using binoculars to watch the crowds standing outside the building.

June 15, 2006 19:55 - Niagara New Vintage Festival promises a busy weekend

If you enjoy your wine you will have a lot to tempt you between now and June 18th. The Niagara New Vintage Festival is here as the Niagara wineries swing into full gear. The following exerpts are from the article Busy weekend planned at Niagara New Vintage Festival in the Niagara Falls Review, June 14, 2006

The region's spring wine festival is set to please the palate once again.

The 11th annual Niagara New Vintage Festival has expanded programs this year and runs until June 18.

"Now is the time to enjoy the great things being offered in Niagara's wine route," said Niagara Grape & Wine Festival spokesman Brian Kroeker. "And we have some great new things this year.
"

A wine and cheese seminar series will be presented by the Dairy Farmers of Canada, taking place Saturday and Sunday during the festival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A winemakers dinner will also take place Saturday at 7 p.m. at Jackson-Triggs.

Another highlight is the New Vintage Niagara gala wine tasting to be held at the St. Catharines Golf & Country Club Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m.

About 700 people attended last year's gala event and around 30,000 people in total attended the 10 days of the festivities, said Kroeker.

June 16, 2006 19:54 - McFarland House: Site of the best, worst of war

JOHN ROBBINS In the Niagara Falls Review, June 13, 2006
Entering the doorway, the low-toned moans of the dying are almost as sickening as the stench of infected flesh.

Sullen cheeks droop from the faces of soldiers, whose bodies have been ripped and riddled in hideous, almost unimaginable ways. The living and the dead are mingled together.

Barely distinguishable from one another, they're laid out on the floors of every room of the once stately house and on the steps leading to the second floor.

The wood-plank floor takes a thirsty drink of blood as a surgeon draws backward on a blade haphazardly positioned on the ghostly-white skin of an exposed thigh.

The house has been stripped bare by the invaders, its doors, windows and mantels are missing.

Still, the house has fared well compared to others in the nearby village. It's one of the few still standing - the rest have been reduced to rubble and ashes.

Sound like a scene from modern-day Iraq or Afghanistan?

Just the opposite. It's actually a glimpse from a long-ago war fought on a not-so-distant battlefield.

Now, fast-forward 193 years.

The war and the people who lived through it are but echoes in time, but McFarland House remains - a tangible reminder that history indeed repeats itself.

"While the past is distant, some things haven't changed," said Rebecca Pascoe, the recently appointed site supervisor of McFarland House, leading a tour of the property.

June 19, 2006 21:43 - Niagara Floral Clock

The Niagara Floral Clock is one of the regular stops when I am showing visitors around Niagara.

There is something mesmerizing about watching a 21 ft and 250 lb second hand sweep by. The clock is 40 feet in diameter with 24,000 colourful carpet plants providing the background. The hour (14.6 ft long) hand and minute hand (17.6 ft) each weigh 500 lbs.

The Floral Clock had been aroung since 1950 and was Ontario's Hydros floral masterpiece. Since 1977, the floral clock is displayed and maintained by the Niagara Parks Commission.

June 22, 2006 20:38 - Superman Returns . . . to the Falls

If you are down by the Falls at night this weekend, keep your eyes peeled for a familiar sight.

"Starting Saturday, Warner Bros. will beam the Man of Steel's red and yellow emblem directly onto the Horseshoe Falls to tie in with Wednesday's opening of Superman Returns." Just like they did 25 years earlier for the premier of Superman II in which Niagara Falls played a memorable part.

"The watery projection will run four days, with a countdown leading to the film's Wednesday opening. The emblem will be seen from 9 am to midnight Saturday to Tuesday. The film company is also scouting the city for a special screening of the movie."

"It marks the first time Niagara Parks has allowed an image projected onto the falls since the 1981 event. Niagara Parks event manager Sarah Wood insists this doesn't open the floodgates for more product placement.'This is certainly only because (Superman ) has a history with Niagara Falls,' she said."

Its good to hear that the Falls are not going to just become another billboard.

Article from Niagara Falls Review June 22, 2006

June 24, 2006 22:02 - General Brock Parkway - at last.

A local hero will receiver some well deserved recognition. Maj-Gen. Sir Isaac Brock, a hero of the War of 1812, will have the highway that passes his monument renamed 'General Brock Parkway'.

Gen. Brock led the British and Canadian soldiers in Upper Canada when the United States declared war in 1812. He led the capture of Detroit and the Battle of Queenston Heights, Oct 13, 1812. He perished in the battle.

'Highway 405, the stretch of road between the Queenston-Lewiston bridge and the Queen Elizabeht Way, will become Gen. Brock Parkway Oct 13.

Its great now. As you drive down the Parkway, you will now know the name of the figure on that tall monument you just passed.

June 28, 2006 21:12 - Super treasure for Kal-El fan.

When you own Superman's cape, thats something. Especially if it was worn by Christopher Reeves during the filming of Superman II in Niagara Falls 27 years ago.

Well, Mark Saccone, a local Niagara Falls resident, does. Its a sweet story on how he got the cape. Read the story in the Niagara Falls Review by John Law, June 28, 2006

June 29, 2006 20:49 - Canada Day -Come for some Birthday cake.

Niagara Falls locals are celebrating Canada Day - July 1 2006 at the Optimist Youth Park. There is a parade starting at 11 am on Morrison Street at Drummond Road and continue west of Morrison to Optimist Park.

There will be some great music with the Caverners (Beatles tribute) and the Maddhatters providing the entertainers. Its hard not to get caught up in a good Beatles set. Then enjoy some birthday cake. There is reportedly enough for 3000 people! There's going to be lots to do for everyone. I know I am going to try and make it.

June 30, 2006 22:46 - St Catharines - Canada Day with Niagara Symphony

If you are in St. Catharines July 1, 2006 try and make it down to Market Square, Downtown.

We are having our Canada Day Family Street Party and there are going to be people everywhere. Maybe it's the memory of five winter months that makes these summer parties special and brings out all these people.

The full pops orchestra of the Niagara Symphony is entertaining with a free, outdoor, one hour concert in the Market Square.

Sounds like its going to be quite a time.
