May 1, 2006 17:30 - 750 die-hard Regis and Kelly fans really happy!
Fallsview Casino Resort sends 750 die-hard 'Live with Regis and Kelly' fans home happy Screams erupt in resort's Grand Hall as excited winners rip open their envelopes
NIAGARA FALLS, ON, April 30 /CNW/ - The enormous Grand Hall at Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort filled with screams of joy Sunday afternoon as 750 lucky people each won a pair of tickets to see the popular daytime talk show Live with Regis and Kelly when the show rolls into Niagara Falls, Canada, for two tapings on May 22.
Fallsview gave the tickets away in an enormous public draw that saw dedicated fans of the show's hosts, Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa, line up at the resort from the crack of dawn right up to the draw's scheduled 3:30pm start time.
"We knew there was going to be a lot of excitement over this draw, but I don't think anyone expected the kind of tremendous enthusiasm we saw in these people," said Steve Wolstenholme, General Manager, Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort. "There were people actually crying for joy when they opened their envelopes and discovered they had won."
The level of enthusiasm in the hall was further amplified when a special greeting to all the contestants from Philbin and Ripa was shown on several large screens located throughout the room.

May 2, 2006 22:12 - Park features point to path of first Welland Canal
Niagara is an area rich in history especially when it comes to the War of 1812. Now an archeologist has found the reminants of the first Welland Canal in Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie, a part of St Catharines. He proposes that the city dig up that history and make it part of Port Dalhousie's future. And I think he is right. With the strong tourist interest in historical Niagara sites and the Welland canal, it would provide a unique and important link to the past and fit neatly in with Port Dalhousie's proposed redevelopment plans.
Below is part of the article by Matthew Van Dongen for the St Catharines Standard.
Friday, April 28, 2006 - 01:00
Local News - It’s hailed as a mountain-conquering feat of engineering, a historic trade canal that pierced the heart of North America. Others refer to it as Merritt’s Ditch.
The first Welland Canal radically reshaped Niagara’s geography, along with its destiny, when it was built in 1826.
Its beginnings, wooden locks and simple earthen walls, were buried long ago in what is now Lakeside Park.
Archeologist Jon Jouppien has found them again and he wants the city to dig up that history and make it part of Port Dalhousie’s future.
“I think there’s a great opportunity here to actually rebuild the first lock, show people how it worked,” said Jouppien.
“With the developments that may be coming in, I think this is the ideal time to bring it to the attention of the public.”

May 3, 2006 20:22 - Armed border in budget
The Conservative government have budgeted 101 Million dollars to train and arm Canadian Custom Officers over the next two years. I guess we have to consider it a sign of the more troubled times we live in . Below is a portion of the article from the Niagara Falls Review. At the end is a link to the rest of the story.Tax cuts, armed border in budget
By COREY LAROCQUE
Local News - Wednesday, May 03, 2006 @ 02:00
NIAGARA FALLS Customs officers at Niagara’s bridges could be carrying guns within two years. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservative government included $101 million over two years to train and arm border officers in its first budget since coming to power.
The Conservatives promised in the last election campaign to equip customs officers with sidearms because of the dangers they face on the job.
“We’re sure glad that the Conservatives have kept their word and put their money where their mouth is,” said Fred Milligan, president of the Customs Excise Union, which represents about 340 customs and immigration workers in Niagara Falls.
When customs officers were issued pepper spray and batons, they were given to officers at the busiest ports of entry first. That would mean Niagara should again be among the first to receive weapons, Milligan said.
Niagara Falls MP Rob Nicholson said he wasn’t sure how soon the training would begin or when the first armed officers would be on duty.
“It’s not something that’s going to show up next week,” he said.

May 4, 2006 18:21 - Maid of the Mist
Is the Maid of the Mist Niagara's best attraction? It has been enjoyed by millions since 1846. The thundering Falls, the turbulent water, mist everywhere. It really is something you won't soon forget. I know I haven't. And the wall of falling water certainly makes a wonderful background for your Niagara vacation memories. So don't forget to bring a camera.
I went on the Maid of the Mist for the first time last year. And that is after living in Niagara since 1964. It just didn't seem like a big deal and the lines to get in were often very long.
The trip was during the week and the small line moved quickly. The excursion was something else. A photographer's delight. And now it is my #1 suggestion to any visitors I am showing around the Falls.
See the pictures and read the story of my trip on the Maid of the Mist.
May 5, 2006 23:41 - An Unbiased view of proposed controversial Port Dalhousie tower
Port Dalhousie is a popular destination for both locals and visitors. The long pier is a delightful walk and the Carosel still only charges 5 cents a ride.It is also the center of local controversy over the proposed development of the Port Place complex. Below is an exerpt from an editorial May 4th in the St Catharines Standard.
St. Catharines city council has been given a valuable document in the debate raging over the Port Place complex.
We're not naive to think the release of the peer review will sway many people's opinions on this project. While there are a few out there who are undecided on a tower in Port Dalhousie, the sides in this debate have been entrenched for some time now.
But this is the first independent review of the tower proposal we've seen, and it's quite distinct from the rhetoric that has coloured the debate thus far.
This peer review document is about as unbiased a look at this project as council is going to see.
The findings of the peer review are quite telling.
Toronto heritage architect Michael McClelland has concluded the complex designed by Michael Kirkland for the Port Dalhousie Vitalization Corp. does fit into the fabric of Port Dalhousie.

May 6, 2006 21:13 - When is a high Canadian dollar a bad thing?
It is when you about one third of your market is used to recieving a premium on every US dollar they spend on vacation.A partial answer could be an increased marketing push, according to local tourism manager Anna Pierce. And I think she is right.
The following exerpt is by Ray Spiteri and John Robbins, May 4, 2006, in the Niagara Falls Review.
Tourism nightmare
Soaring loonie called the sequel to Perfect Storm of tourism woes
NIAGARA FALLS The local tourism industry must step up its marketing to ensure its neighbours south of the border continue to view Niagara Falls as a world-class destination, despite the Canadian dollar setting new 28-year highs, says Anna Pierce, manager of Niagara Falls Tourism.
“When SARS hit, the tourism industry called it the Perfect Storm,” said Pierce.
“If that movie had a sequel, the current situation with the Canadian dollar would be the plot.”
Pierce said news the Canadian dollar cracked 90 cents U.S. Tuesday morning, is one of the “worst things” to happen to a cross-border city like Niagara Falls.
“It seems we are getting lambasted with one thing after another. We have to get right to the U.S. tourist and show them, more than ever, that Niagara Falls is a city worth coming to.”

Niagara has lots of beautiful bikeways for you to pedal through at your own pace. It is a favourite pasttime of both residents and visitors as the Niagara Parkway pathways bustle with activity 3 seasons a year. Now only about 5 kilometers of bike lanes are needed to complete the Greater Niagara Circle Route as reported in the St Catharines Standard.
'We're just about there': About five kilometres of bike lanes needed to complete the Greater Niagara Circle Route
Matthew Van Dongen , Monday, May 08, 2006
Just a little farther.
About five kilometres of bike lanes, in fact, will close a $10-million circle, 15 years in the making ..... a 161-kilometre paved path winding all the way around the region.
The path follows the Welland Canal from St. Catharines, through Thorold to Port Colborne.
There it joins the Friendship Trail on the way to Fort Erie, before winding along the Niagara River Parkway to Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The last section between the popular tourist town and the Garden City is also the last hurdle.
Specifically, about five kilometres of Lakeshore Road, between Four Mile Creek Road and Townline Road, are without bike lanes.

May 10, 2006 19:22 - Show us the money
Things are heating up regarding the proposed new downtown redevelopment. The city council now wants assurances from principal owner Aaron Lichtman and the Historic Niagara Group. Read all what Corey Larocque has to say in the May 10, 2006 issue of the Niagara Falls Review.Show us the money
by Corey Larocque
NIAGARA FALLS The next move in a creating a new retail district downtown is up to the Historic Niagara group, says city council, whose members are looking for assurances the investors can make good on their promises.
At the end of a five-hour discussion Monday about how to proceed with Historic Niagara’s proposal to create a retail district on Queen Street, council said it wants principal owner Aaron Lichtman to provide more information about his partners investors and their ability to deliver on their plan.
“The ball is in Mr. Lichtman’s court and I’m sure he’ll produce,” Ald. Selina Volpatti said Tuesday.
Lichtman heads a group that says it can invest $100 million and attract a variety of retail stores downtown if the city spends $35 million on new parks, a parking garage and improved gateways to Queen Street.

May 11, 2006 17:07 - Major Musical Festival for Niagara being considered.
I read a very interesting article in the St Catharines Standard I want to share with you. There are no international music festivals currently in Canada. Sad but true. But that is something that might change. As the potential for an international music festival in Canada is being investigated, the great news for Niagara is that the iniators are only looking at Niagara.
Niagara eyed for major music festival: Feasibility study commissioned by Toronto Symphony, National Arts Centre
by Lori Littleton in the St Catharines Standard - Tuesday, May 09, 2006
Project Niagara is a joint initiative by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Ottawa's National Arts Centre Orchestra to develop an international music festival based in Niagara. The two groups have hired consultants who are developing a feasibility study, the first phase of which is expected to be completed within a couple of months.
The consultants are currently meeting with local arts and cultural groups to determine what exists in Niagara and what sort of festival might work for the region. ....
---
John Linton, a partner with Toronto-based TCI Management Consultants, said the impetus for the project began a year and a half ago when National Arts Centre president and CEO Peter Herrndorf was reading the New York Times, which annually compiles a list of international music festivals.
"He noticed there was nothing in Canada and he thought, 'Why shouldn't there be something?' " Linton said.
Herrndorf spoke with Toronto Symphony chief executive officer Andrew Shaw about the potential for an international music festival in Canada. When considering where the festival could be held, Herrndorf and Shaw thought Niagara would be ideal.
"The advantage is it has a brand name for international recognition," Linton explained. "Secondly, there are a number of related tourist infrastructures ... such as hotel quality, accommodations, interesting restaurants, wine tourism, Shaw Festival, the ambiance of Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Niagara Parks facilities."
Another advantage is the number of cultural and arts groups that already exist, such as the Niagara Symphony, Chorus Niagara, various art galleries including Rodman Hall, Grimsby Art Gallery and the Niagara-on-the-Lake Pumphouse and myriad theatre companies.

Avaia premieres with a high-flying gala opening on May 20th, 2006. Exerpts from the story in the Niagara Falls Review follows.
Cirque Niagara rides into town
Avaia combines equestrian glamour with high-flying performance
By JOHN LAW May 11, 2006
Dubbed Avaia, the show is hyped as a “mystical journey into the abyss of time where ancient mysteries of the past engage with the innovations of the future.” Created by the Kantemirov family of Russia, it combines equestrian glamour with high-flying performance.
With its new age music, moody lighting and storytelling finesse, it also brings to mind another Cirque. In fact, co-creator Oleg Kantemirov performed in several Cirque de Soleil productions and brings the same flair for the dramatic to Cirque Niagara.
....
Cirque Niagara president and CEO Peter Mercanti believes the two shows stand apart - for one thing, Cirque du Soleil does not use animals.
“We have a lot to be grateful for to the Cirque du Soleil people,” he says. “But by the same token, this product - these people that are here - is where Cirque drew a lot of talent from when they first started.”
Mercanti says the “horse component” is the biggest difference. Nineteen horses from Russia and Europe arrived on April 25 after a 14-hour flight on a Russian military plane. Many of the breeds have never been seen in Canada before, including a three-year-old Akhalteke named Mametkul - a stunning albino stallion with pinkish-blue eyes.

May 13, 2006 23:32 - Laura Secord Homestead- Not like Willie Wonka
What does the historic Laura Secord Homestead in Queenston and Laura Secord candy company have in common?Very little besides the name. And the fact that the chocolates are sold in the gift shop. This interesting piece was in the St Catharines Standard.
Laura Secord Homestead: sweet history
by Monique Beech in the St. Catharines Standard - Thursday, May 11, 2006
Many tourists breeze through the back door of the historic Laura Secord Homestead in Queenston looking for chocolate.
It's a source of mock frustration for the museum's charismatic curator.
"People expect to see Willy Wonka's chocolate factory," says Claire Gregory, throwing her hands up in the two-storey home's sparsely decorated kitchen.
There are a few china plates, a cast iron kettle and a pot. No evidence of chocolate making.
"We're talking about other Canadians. I want to say, 'Come on people.'
"We have to forgive them. They're not immersed in the history like we are (in Niagara)."
The only connection the property at 29 Queenston St. has to the Laura Secord candy company is that it bought and restored the house in 1971 and later gifted the historic site to the Niagara Parks Commission in 1998.
Many people are surprised to learn the white-panelled home, built in 1803, was the starting point for a treacherous 32-kilometre journey that vaulted Laura Secord into the rank of Canadian heroine, says Gregory.

May 15, 2006 23:25 - Niagara Falls - Do Visitors think US or Canada?
With the Canadian side having a more developed tourist industry, it is quite likely that the ads that prospective tourists see highlight Canadian attractions.Niagara Falls, N.Y. is in an enviable position of marketing to all the 12 million visitors annually who visit Niagara. With over 1/3 of the visitors coming from the US, all the Americans without passports as of Jan 1,2008, can still enjoy the Falls and a more limited selection of additional attractions states-side.
Marketing the two Niagaras together may however be the best long-term solution to continued growth and prospects. That is the purpose of Summit 2006 - Creating the Cross Border Capital.
The following is from Ray Spiteri's article May 12, 2006 in the Niagara Falls Review
Market Niagaras as one, group told
BY RAY SPITERI Review Staff Writer
NIAGARA FALLS Visitors to Niagara crave the cross-border experience and the tourism industry on both sides of the river should start promoting the region as one international destination, says Arlene White, executive director of the Binational Tourism Alliance.
“The Niagara Falls bureau on state side will be the first ones to tell you that 60 per cent of the people who visit Niagara Falls, N.Y., want the two-country experience,” said White.
She said with an “iconic” destination like Niagara, it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing the region is “unflappable.
”
“Today, there’s a much more educated global travel community, and with emerging markets like Australia and China, we have to remain on our toes.”
White spoke at the AmeriCana Conference Resort and Spa Thursday afternoon as part of Summit 2006: Creating the Cross Border Capital.
The two-day event, which concludes today at the Conference Center in Niagara Falls, N.Y., covers a variety of issues relevant to both sides of the river.

May 16, 2006 21:34 - Historic Niagara proposal accepted by Niagara Falls city council
It seems that both Niagara Falls city council and Historic Niagara have decided to work together in revitalizing downtown Naigara Falls. This first, but crucial step, took place May 8. After a four-hour discussion, council agreed to most of the points the Historic Niagara group has said need to be done for their revitilization project to be successful.
The article from the Niagara Falls Review provides the details.
Council, Lichtman agree on project
Corey Larocque, Review Staff Writer
Tuesday, May 09, 2006
Local News - After a brief courtship, city council appears to have said yes to the proposal from Historic Niagara to revitalize downtown Niagara Falls.
Aaron Lichtman, the head of the Historic Niagara investment group, says he’s “sold” on revitalizing downtown Niagara Falls and had just been waiting for council to take the plunge.
“I think council wants to get married. We just want to make sure there’s a pre-nup,” said Ald. Vince Kerrio.
After a four-hour discussion, council agreed to most of the points the Historic Niagara group has said need to be in place for their revitalization project to work.
By the end of the marathon meeting, Lichtman and council seemed to be on a honeymoon. Lichtman volunteered publicly that his group’s first project would be the renovation of the Rosbergs department store building.

May 17, 2006 21:17 - Port Dalhousie tower has city planner's blessing.
St Catharines city planner Paul Chapman feels the Port tower is the best way to save Port Dalhousies beleaguered business district.'In rejecting the advice of both the Port Dalhousie Heritage District Advisory Committee and the St Catharines Heritage Committee which both recommended denial of the project. Chapman accepted the advice of a heritage architect hired by the developer and a heritage architect hired by the city (but paid for by the developer.)
It is unfortunate that the two architects with positive recommendations are both paid by the same group that stands to benefit from their recommendations. Would you bite the hand that feeds you?
An impartial recommendation might be the same, but I, as a citizen of St Catharines, would feel a lot better about its advice.
We are not talking about a small change here. The current height limit for commercial buildings in the core is three storeys. The proposed tower is 17 storeys. We are talking about a difference of 14 storeys.
With such a significant change in the landscape of this historic area, the credibility of the heritage architects must be above reproach. After all, how much will city council change the rules in hope of additional property taxes and anticipated $65-million injection into the local economy (Unverified projections).
This is just my openion as a concerned citizen of St Catharines.
This commentary is based on an article titled Tower has planners' blessing by Marlene Bergsma in the St Catharines Standard May 16, 2006. Read the complete article.
May 19, 2006 19:10 - Niagara Tourism gets a 18 month reprieve
The US senate voted to delay the passport requirement for US land entry. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative's impelmentation date was moved from Jan 1, 2008 to June 1, 2009.
It is the new rule that requires everyone including Americans entering the US at a land border to show a passport or some other new document that shows the holder's identity and citizenship.
The security measure was recommended by the 9/11 commission.
The major concern is that the cost of getting passports would significantly reduce cross-border tourism.
And it is high. An adult Canadian passport will put you back $87 while an American passport is $97 US. When a family is involved, the total cost of passports for the whole family would certainly discourage cross-border tourism.
The hope is that other, less costly identification could satisfy security concerns.
These alternatives now have a chance to be evaluated and maybe even implemented.
'A US Senate vote to delay the so-called passport requirement many fear will hurt tourism is a victory for Niagara because it buys some time, says Niagara Falls Mayor Ted Salci. - Niagara Falls Review, May 19, 2006

May 22, 2006 16:25 - Big Becky is coming to NIagara Falls
The Niagara Falls Review had a great article in the paper about Big Becky. She is coming to town this summer and does she have a job to do.
Big Job for Big Becky
Local News - NIAGARA FALLS - When Big Becky comes to town this summer, she will take one of the biggest construction jobs in Ontario and help the provincial government live up to its promise of producing cleaner electricity.
Big Becky is the new nickname given to the tunnel-boring machine that will dig a third hydro tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls. Ontario Energy Minister Donna Cansfield made the announcement Thursday during a tour of the construction site near the Sir Adam Beck hydroelectric generators.
"Mining equipment is traditionally given a woman's name for good luck," Cansfield said.
A Grade 6 class at Port Weller elementary school came up with the winning entry in a contest to name the massive machine.
-
They called it Becky because it's a feminine twist that pays tribute to Sir Adam Beck, considered the founder of public electricity in Ontario and the namesake of the two generating stations in Niagara Falls.
They call it big because it's one of the largest pieces of tunnelling machinery in the world.
"The star of the show will be delivered in components," Ernst Gschnitzer, the project manager for the Austrian company hired to dig the tunnel. "It is the largest hard-rock tunnel-boring machine in the world."

May 23, 2006 19:02 - Regis and Kelly Live from Niagara Falls
Regis and Kelly Live from Niagara Falls was, in this viewer's opinion, a big success.I was not one of the fortunate 750 guests who got picked to be part of the audience.
So I watched Monday and Today's show on TV like everybody else around North America.
The show broadcast live from Queen Victoria Park at 9am. The second show was taped at 11am in front of a second live audience.
It was a bright sunny morning but the temperature was cool. Not to big a surprice for an early May morning in the Great White North.
By the end of the first show a shivering Kelly was wrapped in a blanket. She never really complained though.
When the next show started (taped yesterday at 11am but shown this morning) she was warmly dressed and ready to carry on.
The backdrop of the American Falls and the sunny morning provided a beautiful backdrop to the couples entertaining banter.
The shows main local focus, besides the Falls themselves, was to repeatedly promote Niagara Falls as the 'Honeymoon Capital of the World'.
Regis and Kelly had numerous photos of couples who had gotten married in Niagara Falls, and were introduced from the audience.
They ended up their second show with a contest between 3 married couples. Some of the questions were predictible like Where did you have your first kiss and what is her favourite ice cream. The winning couple were also the longest married. It was the couple I was cheering for.
All in all, from this viewers point of view, Niagara Falls looked like a beautiful, exciting and friendly place to visit. And as Regis and Kelly pointed out. American visitors do not need a passport to visit this or next year.
Well done Regis and Kelly. And Thank You!
May 24, 2006 21:11 - NPC preparing 'Major Announcement'
The Niagara Parks Commission is determined to give tourists and locals more reasons to play in Niagara Parks. And over the next 10 years, they are going to spend half-a-billion dollars on doing just that. A 'Major Announcement is coming this summer.
Some uses for that money are already known. In the next couple of years, the NPC will acquire the Toronto Power and Canadian Niagara Power buildings.
The CNP building, in particular, NPC Chairman Jim Williams said, is in pristine condition and would be the ideal spot for a museum dedicated to Niagara's connection to the history of hydro-electric power.
The Parks will also obtain a third power station building located in the gorge, which will be destroyed to "return the gorge to its natural state," Williams said.
While those projects are in the future, there are plans in the works for at least one new attraction for the summer of 2006.
"Moonlight movies" will be shown in the Oakes Garden Theatre this July and August, with midnight screenings of popular films.
Read all the details in Jennifer Pellegrini in the May 24 issue of the Niagara Falls Review.
May 25, 2006 18:59 - Bush is aware of Canadian concerns.
Some good news from south of the border. The following exerpts are from a Canadian Press article in the St. Catharines Standard, May 23, 2006.WASHINGTON - U.S. President George W.Bush suggested Monday the United States is flexible on working out which new identification cards will be acceptable at the border with Canada, saying they shouldn't be "restrictive."
Bush, asked about the American security plan after a speech in Chicago by a Canadian in the audience, said he supports the law requiring a passport or a special border card from everyone entering the United States at land crossings, slated to come into effect Jan. 1, 2008.
"Now we're working with your government to make sure that the identification cards that will be used between our two borders are compatible not only with our needs but your needs," Bush said.
"We're working on it to make sure that whatever documents are needed will not be restrictive. But nevertheless (provide) information, I guess is the best way to put it."
Canada is worried the U.S. security plan involving a new high-technology ID card with proof of citizenship will tie up the border and put a big dent in tourism and commerce, a concern shared by many American legislators and business groups.
Congress passed strict ID requirements in 2004 to more closely monitor who's entering and leaving the country in light of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
---

Bush didn't address a potential delay in the ID measures.
Last week, the Senate passed an amendment to postpone the program until June 1, 2009, but officials on both sides of the border caution it's far from certain whether it will become law.
Some observers said Bush's comments Monday were encouraging and could indicate the White House doesn't plan to stand in the way of whatever changes may be made by Congress, where several legislators are planning various amendments to the law.

Lost revenue from the so-called Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative has been estimated at about $2 billion Cdn in Canada and about half that in the United States.
Tourism companies say convention bookings in Canada have already taken a hit because of concerns about crossing the border.
The rules require a passport or another secure document from people crossing land borders into the United States. They come into effect a year earlier, on Jan. 1, 2007, for travellers arriving by sea and air.

May 26, 2006 18:55 - Zidenberg played key role in bringing Casino to city
There is a interesting article in the Niagara Falls Review that speaks well of Niagara's growing reputation at a desired destination. According to a Fallsview Casino consultant, 'the Fallsview's reputation as Canada's premier gambling destination is entrenched in the United States', and now the focus is expanding to Europe and Asia, particularly in China. Its exciting ot see the synergy of our various attractions come into play. Exerpts are from the article by Jennifer Pellegrini.Niagara Falls Review, May 26, 2006
Zidenberg gambled on gaming career: Played key role in bringing casino to city
Aubrey Zidenberg, president and CEO of Casino Amusements Canada, has been involved with Casinos in Ontario right from the beginning..
...
...
Zidenberg's company, which has an ongoing contract with the Fallsview group to develop marketing strategies for the casinos, also had a hand in the development of slots-at-track facilities, such as the Fort Erie Race Track Slots.
Today, he spends three or four days a week at Fallsview, overseeing events aimed at luring high rollers to the property.
---
---
And, he added, it's working.
He credits local businesses and the Falls Management Company for creating a full spectrum of events and venues occasional and high-stakes gamblers and their families can enjoy.
That work, Zidenberg said, not only helps each individual facility, it's good for all of Niagara.
"There are 16,000 rooms just minutes away from here," he said. "And exactly as Steve Wynn (Las Vegas pioneer) said, they've enclosed and summerized."
Zidenberg said with Fallsview's reputation as Canada's premiere gambling destination entrenched in the United States, it's time to look east to Europe, the Middle East and Asia to attract new players, particularly in China.
With more freedom to travel, many Chinese come to Toronto to visit relatives. A day trip to Niagara Falls, he said, is almost guaranteed, as long as people understand how close a drive it is.

May 27, 2006 20:57 - Isnt Niagara historically important?
Even though Niagara is steeped in history, it hasn't gotten the historical recognition the area and it former inhabitants deserve. Maj-General Sir Isaac Brock is not recognized as a national historical figure. A good article in the Review sheds some light on the sorry state of affairs.
Little recognition for Niagara's rich history
Corey Larocque for The Niagara Falls Review, May 26, 2006
NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE - Niagara has a rich history, but this area - especially Niagara Falls - comes up short on the federal government's list of significant historical figures.
Thursday's inclusion of Laura Secord, a heroine in the War of 1812, as a person of national historic significance makes her one of the few Niagarans on the government's roster of people whose actions shaped the course of Canadian history.
"I don't know why it took so long, frankly," said Robert Bothwell, a University of Toronto history professor and one of two members from Ontario on the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.
The board unveiled a plaque outside of the Laura Secord Homestead Museum.
"She was a figure of absolutely national historic significance," Bothwell said.
But another War of 1812 figure, Maj.-Gen. Sir Isaac Brock has not yet been included as a national historic person.
"Somebody like Brock would be a natural candidate for being a national historic figure. He died in defence of this country," Bothwell said.
